Grammys 2019 Grammys CARDI B Invasion Of Privacy

All a bad bitch need is the Grammy.

In one of the very few moments of true sincerity, surprise, and enjoyment at the 2019 Grammy awards , Cardi B, after slaying a 1920s-style, burlesque-inspired performance of her hit “Money,” was awarded Best Rap Album for 2018's Invasion of Privacy, her debut full-length. She is the first solo woman to ever receive the award, which was first introduced in 1996 and given to Naughty by Nature for their fourth album, Poverty’s Paradise. The first woman to ever win the award was Lauryn Hill, as part of the Fugees, in 1997.

Cardi joins a short list of women who were even nominated: Eve, Missy Elliott, Nicky Minaj, Iggy Azalea and others.

Cardi, who won over Nipsey Hussle’s Victory Lap, Pusha T’s Daytona, Travis Scott’s Astroworld, and a posthumous nomination for Mac Miller’s Swimming, gave an heartfelt acceptance speech, describing the challenges of finishing her record while pregnant. Watch a snippet of that, below.

Correction: A previous version of this post named Cardi B as the first woman to win a Grammy for Best Rap Album. In fact, she is the first solo artist to win; Lauryn Hill won as part of the Fugees in 1997. Jezebel regrets the error.
