Ignore the Cloverfield Part of The Cloverfield Paradox

Cloverfield The Cloverfield Paradox Review

The Netflix Mind Trick worked on me and as soon as the Super Bowl was over I watched The Cloverfield Paradox. Despite the title and some other references it’s better to think of the movie as its own thing without connecting it to the Cloverfield universe.

Most of the movie takes place about a space station (sometimes referred to as Cloverfield Station) occupied by an international crew. (On a side note the crew knows both English and Chinese which allows Zhang Ziyi to speak Chinese the whole time.) The crew’s mission is to use an experimental particle reactor to develop a new energy source before the growing energy crisis on Earth erupts into full blown war. Of course something goes wrong and the crew has to deal with it.

My non-spoilery thoughts are that The Cloverfield Paradox is a decent enough movie though there’s plenty to nitpick on the science. The movie has a good cast including Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Daniel Bruhl, David Oyelowo, Elizabeth Debicki, and the aforementioned Zhang Ziyi but they are hampered by a mediocre script. The Cloverfield Paradox shouldn’t go to the top of your “must see” list but it’s worth checking out at some point.

Spoilery thought below the image.

As I implied above, the Cloverfield connections are extraneous. The last scene in particular comes across as something unnecessarily tacked on to tie this movie into the Cloverfield universe.
