Elihu's Four in February 2018: Short and Sweet Will Do It This Time

Hey! It’s almost February, and you know what that means.

It means it’s time for my Four in February! And my articles! And the Prologue, full of questions!

What is Four in February?

Wow! I’m really glad you asked! (Wait, again?) I’ll copy/paste my usual spiel from previous Prologues:

Four in February is an event that an amount of gamers participate in where we beat four games in the month of February. We don’t do it for any reason other than to devote some time to beating 4 games. Joystiq contributor Mike Suszek came up with the idea in 2013, and threw down the gauntlet to anybody who’d be willing to do it.

Why do you do it?

I have a really big backlog of games. Bundles and my very weak will during sales are to blame for this. Because of this massive backlog, I’ve decided to carve out some time to clear four games during the month of February. I also use the time to practice my article writing, as I write reviews/writeups after I finish each game. It’s almost like a book report for school, even though I’m not in school.

Okay, what did you do in years previous?

The first one is a little muddy, as I don’t have super clear records of doing it, and my achievements and my old TAY posts from back when it was just a fan-curated comment wall differ slightly. But here’s what I’m calling my Four in 2013:

  • Antichamber
  • Mass Effect 1
  • Mass Effect 2
  • Torchlight

2014 brought my first major speedbump: I wasn’t really motivated to play my original final game, which was Dragon Age: Origins. I wound up swapping it out for a game I was roughly 60% finished, Shin Megami Tensei IV, as I had been regularly putting time into the game as the month was progressing anyways. This was the first year I did anything resembling writeups, even though they weren’t my best work. My Four in 2014:

  • Spec Ops: The Line
  • Doom 3 BFG Edition (Doom 3 and the included Expansion Packs)
  • Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD
  • Shin Megami Tensei IV

2015 brought my second and third speedbumps, one of which was extremely devastating: I couldn’t bring myself to enjoy Dishonored, as I felt it was actively punishing me for trying to play non-lethally and perfect stealth, something that I knew was possible to do in the first place; and I had company, which wound up basically taking a week out of my month. I corrected the first speedbump by replaying two childhood games and combining it into one for my Four, and I added a week to the end of my month to make up for the lost time to finish Tomb Raider (2013). My Four in 2015:

  • The Bureau: XCOM Declassified
  • Bastion
  • Metroid Prime & The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D
  • Tomb Raider (2013)

The only real problem I had with 2016 was that I had issues getting my last few writeups up on time, even though I did for sure finish all the games within the allotted time. I even managed to play a bunch of Destiny during that time (Iron Banner and Crimson Doubles both happened, so it was a busy Destiny month), so aside from two late articles, I feel 2016 was a resounding success for my Four. My Four in 2016:

  • F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin
  • Assassin’s Creed Unity
  • Transistor
  • Wolfenstein: The Old Blood

So, 2017. What a year. What a horrible, horrible year. I themed my year around horror games, and I wound up failing miserably. I finished two games, I wrote about one, and I completely scrapped the article I was going to write about the other game. My Four in 2017 were (supposed to be):

  • Tattletail (completed)
  • Resident Evil 4 HD (completed, no article)
  • Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate
  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent

What are you doing this year?

Well, after last year’s spectacular failure (it was bound to happen), I’m taking a slightly different approach: Two of these are very short games, while the other two are a bit longer, but I’ve had them on my radar for a while, one for much longer than the other.

  • Tacoma
  • Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
  • The Silver Case
  • Metal Gear Rising: Revengance

What if you don’t finish this?

Then I’ve failed you again, and I should try for something a little more… realistic. I’ve moved out of the place I lived in last year and I have an actual desk to work on these write-ups now, so that should help (I wrote most of my TAY articles from my bed in previous years). The games are on average shorter than the other games I’ve picked in previous years, with the longest of the bunch probably being The Silver Case, based solely on howlongtobeat.com’s expertise.

Anything else?

As per previous years, I 100% reserve the right to swap out a title for any reason, but I’m fairly certain that I won’t have too many problems this year around.

I might even try streaming these, but no guarantee. If I do, there won’t be a facecam for sure and I may or may not have a mic going. This all depends on: 1) whether or not I want to stream; and 2) if I want to do it through Steam itself or fight and figure out how OBS works.

As for asking to help on the stream front, I’ve got friends who do stream, so I’ll probably ask for their expertise with anything. I really do appreciate suggestions, but I might not take it into advisement, so please bear with me.

One final thought, and maybe a tease for next year: I was originally planning for this year to be a “Famously Bad Games” year, as I’ve already got a few of them on Steam saved for just an event, but I really wanted to prove to myself that last year was just a fluke and that I can do this for real, like with a proper work ethic and everything.

Elihu typically lurks around TAY reading the occasional article and occasionally comments on Kotaku articles. Every February he writes his Four in February articles for TAY, and on rare occasions writes words about not-4iF things.
