The Quest for the North Pole. Hardcover non-fiction reread. Something I found on the bargain table at Barnes & Noble. Arctic exploration was particularly foolhardy and tragic. No one ever learned a single lesson from previous expeditions. They went into the ice, they got trapped, and most of them died.
One warning for dog lovers. Dogs are treated horrifically in these tales, over and over. One reason I had never reread this book till now.
Don’t eat polar bear liver. It has toxic levels of Vitamin A in it.
Charles Francis Hall. Poisoned with arsenic it was found after his body was exhumed many years later.
Elisha Kane. Sent looking for Franklin.
Robert Peary. Giant asshole. Liar. Claimed to have reached the Pole. He did not. I am reading his section now.
S.A. Andree and two others attempted the Pole by balloon. They crashed on the ice.
